History of HTUS

In 1955, the Korean missionary group from the Presbyterian institutions in the southern U.S.A. established Honam Bible School. The school’s objective was to cultivate church leaders from among the residents of farming and fishing villages in the Gwangju area. After some time, the Honam Bible School needed to offer a higher quality of education. To meet this need, Honam Bible School, Sun chon Maesan Theology School, and Gwangju Night School merged under the name Honam Theology Institution.

A short time later, in 1963, Honam Theology Institution was renamed Honam Theology Seminary. Honam Theology Seminary was recognized as a Korean university in 1984. A church music department was established in 1988. Honam Theology Seminary finally became a university. A graduate school of theology was approved in 1995. With the addition of the professional graduate school, Honam Theological University took the shape it has today.
