History of HTUS

In 1955, the Korean missionary group from the Presbyterian institutions in the southern U.S.A. established Honam Bible School. The school¡¯s objective was to cultivate church leaders from among the residents of farming and fishing villages in the Gwangju area. After some time, the Honam Bible School needed to offer a higher quality of education. To meet this need, Honam Bible School, Sun chon Maesan Theology School, and Gwangju Night School merged under the name Honam Theology Institution.

A short time later, in 1963, Honam Theology Institution was renamed Honam Theology Seminary. Honam Theology Seminary was recognized as a Korean university in 1984. A church music department was established in 1988. Honam Theology Seminary finally became a university. A graduate school of theology was approved in 1995. With the addition of the professional graduate school, Honam Theological University took the shape it has today.
